What is it like to be a bat?

Participant: Emily Oomen

Q: When you think of bats, what first comes to your mind?

Something about bats that peaks my curiosity is that bats are nocturnal. When I think about bats, I think of their behavior in relation to a metaphor (i.e. bat cave).

Q: You just spent a period of time imagining what it is like to be a bat. What did you imagine?

Behavior: nocturnal; Activity: flying; Phenomenon: echo-location, i.e. bats trying to find each other. I also thought a bit about how my body was sitting and trying to be relaxed as I was sitting and people were watching. I was also pretty aware of photos were being taken.

Q: During the time you were imagining, were you somewhere?

At first I was flying in a forest and mid-air. Then I was flying through a suburban town. Then I imagined I was flying near and through a city. Then I tried to think of where bats actually live, which I realized is foresty terrain, so I imagined I was flying through foresty terrain.
