Xenoglossia

Xenoglossia is a collaborative artistic practice between Ted Hiebert and Christian Kuras. It encompasses many ways of working and produces video, sound and performance. Xenoglossia: the phenomenon of unintentionally making an utterance in a language one does not speak. We are bound to run afoul of language.

Project descriptions are included below.

A Model of 2-Dimensional Time (2004-09)

Current discussion has led us to begin this project. It is a response to ideas in quantum mechanics and string theory, which posit the existense of two dimensions of time. Based on the repurcusions of this claim, we would like to construct an experiential model of this proposed planar time. Just as the introduction of perspective to western painting invoked a third dimension of depth in a two-dimensional surface, we hope to invoke this second dimension of time using the temporally unidimensional medium of video. with a bit of sculpture/installation thrown in.

Just Ted Flying & Experimental Self Hypnosis: Flying (2001-05)

This project is the culmination of almost three years work. During this time, Ted has been learning to fly. He's pretty good, considering how short a time he's been practicing. The project is a performance in which Ted simply flies around the venue. He flies for about two hours. Ted can only fly for this amount of time because flying is a very taxing activity. There are also photo-documents of the performance for the duration of the exhibition, as well as a self-hypnosis CD so that the audience can try the process out. Our feeling is that flying is a political act -- it is an ostentatious rejection of impossibility and an attack on prevailing notions of sensicality and reality.
